The rugby season starts on Saturday and most of our local clubs are in league action. 

In Tribute Southern Counties South, Weymouth & Portland rugby club who won promotion from the Dorset & Wilts Division 1 last season through a play-off game against Chippenham 2nd team have a tough baptism making the trip to Avonvale. 

The Bath based club finished last season in 9th position in the league table and will provide a big test for the Seahorses on Saturday.

Dorchester have to kick off their season with a tough derby game at Coburg Road against near neighbours Swanage & Wareham.

Only one place and three league points separated the two Dorset clubs last season with Dorchester finishing in 5th place with 66 league points and the Swans one place below with 63 league points so on that form it’s anybody’s choice who will emerge as victors from this contest.

In the local football Weymouth host Maidstone at the Bob Lucas Stadium in a National League South fixture. 

Dorchester, who claimed their first Southern League Premier victory this season on Monday at Poole, travel into Devon to play Plymouth Parkway in a preliminary round of the FA Cup. 

Lewis Waterfield scored the match winner for the Magpies, a Beckham like free kick at Poole on Monday.

In the Wessex League Portland United visit Brockenhurst whilst in the Southwest Peninsular League East Bridport are also in Devon at Dartmouth. 

On Sunday Bridport women’s team play Crewkerne away.
