It is with deep regret to report the passing of former Weymouth Rugby Club stalwart Cedric “Spyda” Webb who was 67.

Spyda served in the Royal Navy and was based at HMS Osprey Portland through the early 1970’s when he joined Weymouth Rugby Club who he turned out for over 20 years. He was a prop forward and also served on the clubs management committee in various roles eventually serving as Club Chairman and Head Coach.

Spyda played for the Royal Navy First XV, the Fleet Air Arm First XV and was heavily involved in the management of the Combined Services squad where he enjoyed his liaisons with the England players Rory and Tony Underwood.


Spyda also ran in and trained the Fleet Air Arm’s Field Gun Crew competing at the Royal Tournament in London.

He had been ill for some time and passed away peacefully in his sleep at his family home in Derby last Tuesday 26th of January.


Spyda was unmarried at the time of his passing, but leaves a daughter Isabella 16 and son George 14.


The arrangements for Spyda’s Funeral are as follows, 2.15 pm Tuesday 9th February at All Saints Church, Stanley Common, Ilkeston, Derbyshire. DE7 6FS. The wake will be held at the Local Servicemen’s and Workingmen’s Club DE7 6FY which is 300 yards from the church.
