RFU County Shield Report.

Dorset & Wilts. 12 pts. V Surrey 41.

The visitors gained revenge for their Twickenham final defeat in this competition two years ago at the hands of the Twin Counties.

The Dorset and Wilts. youngsters never really got to terms with their Surrey counterparts even when the visitors were down to 14 players for 10 minutes mid way through the second half when their full back Fraser Mosley received a yellow card for a “professional foul”.

Surrey took an early lead with a try from number 8 Ian White converted by fly half Neil Hallett.

Twenty minutes had elapsed when centre Matt Noble crossed beneath the home posts to touch down for a try with Hallett converting.

Half time beckoned and the Twin Counties mounted their first serious challenge and following a scrum close to the visitors line Chippenham number 8 Bobby Lyons set up left wing Tim Berry for a try.

A late Hallett penalty saw the score at the break 17 points to five in favour of the visitors.

After the interval the Twin Counties had a chance to pull three points back, but the penalty was missed and Surrey blasted downfield for wing Fraser Carlisle to score a try beneath the post that skipper Hallett converted.

Eight minutes into the second half and Salisbury full back Tom Pottage latched on a kick and chase to ground the ball for a try which he duly converted making the score Dorset and Wilts 12 points Surrey 24.

However, from here on in it was all the Neil Hallett show, he charged down an attempted clearance kick to follow up and touchdown then at the death he gathered up a stray pass and ran in beneath the home posts, he converted both tries to seal a worthy victory for his team.

RFU County Shield Preview.

08 05 2013

Dorset & Wilts v Surrey at Bestwall Wareham Saturday kick off 2.30.

The Twin Counties entertain Surrey on Saturday in their final pool game of this season’s competition and are on a high after beating Oxfordshire by 58 points to 14 at Chippenham last weekend.
Dorset and Wilts are twice winners of the County Shield beating Leicestershire at Twickenham three years ago and Surrey the following season.
Only a victory will be enough to see the Combined Counties progress into the semi final as Surrey have a superior points differential so if the contest ends in a draw it will be Surrey who go through.
County manager Julie Swann said, “It would be great for the lads if we can get a big crowd out to support the team, I am informed that some ex-county players are going to turn up and using it as a get together to trade stories of times past. Also local lad Charlie Rowberry scored four tries last week so I hope that Swanage and Wareham club members and supporters turn out to see him play in a county shirt and that maybe he can chip in with a try or two in front of his own crowd”.
It’s was a tough call for the selectors as some of the players who turned out against Berkshire in the opening pool game and were not available last week are back in contention.
They have elected to make six changes to the starting xv, in come Salisbury full back Tom Pottage, Chippenham centre Rupert Crockett, Salisbury scrum half Jake Williams, Salisbury prop Gareth Blackborow, Chippenham hooker Jon Turner, and Swindon flanker Dan McCarthy.
The team is,

RFU County Shield Report.

Swanage and Wareham right wing Charlie Rowberry was the only Dorset representative in the Combined Counties starting fifteen and what an addition he turned out be, crossing for four tries, two each side of the break. The difficult conditions with a strong wind blowing diagonally across the park left the ball handling of both sides with much to be desired, however it was the hosts who adapted first and Salisbury flanker Sean Barwick capped a fine move backing up his threequarters to touch down for the games opening try. It wasn’t long before Rowberry crossed for his first try of the afternoon converted by Swindon fly half Cameron Brown. Rowberry followed it up with his second touchdown only for the visitors to open their account with a try from Grove flanker Ben Nichol converted by Oxford Quins fly half Will Hillton. Just before the interval Swindon right wing Tim Berry grabbed a fifth try for Dorset and Wilts , again converted by Brown to make the score at the break Dorset and Wilts 24 points to Oxfordshire 7. Following the restart Guy Nichol put the visitors back into contention with a try with Hilton adding the extras. Chippenham number 8 Bobby Lyons was on hand to grab a touchdown from the base of a 5 meter scrum and then Rowberry completed his hat trick of tries with his third of the day. With his home crowd cheering him on Chippenham centre Gary Champion crossed the whitewash to score with club mate Rupert Crockett following him over a few minutes later for a touchdown and Brown to convert. Full time was beckoning but there was enough on the clock for The Counties to grab 2 more tries the first from North Dorset’s replacement Harry Salisbury and Rowberry with his fourth converted by Brown. After the game Dorset and Wilts manager Julie Swann said: “Great team performance we were enforced to make seven changes to the team and they took a little time to gel, but when they did they produced some quality rugby. Now we look forwards to next Saturday’s final pool game against Surrey at Swanage and Wareham’s Bestwall Park”.

RFU County Shield Preview.

Fresh from their 23 points to 17 victory against Berkshire at Newbury last weekend Dorset & Wilts. entertain Oxfordshire at Chippenham on Saturday in their second pool game of this season’s championship.
The Twin Counties are twice winners of this competition and plan to make it all the way to a Twickenham final for a third time.
However the host team selectors are forced into making seven changes to their starting xv.

In comes prop Steve Bailey, flanker Sean Barwick, scrum half Connal Knott, wings Tim Berry and Charlie Rowberry, centre Gary Champion and full back Laurence Baker.

Team manager Julie Swann said: “With two home pool games still to play winning away last Saturday was a bonus for us, however we take nothing for granted and are expecting a tough encounter. Having to make seven changes is not the preparation we would have chosen, but with some players away on tour and others not available for other reasons we will just have to work with the squad we have and I am sure they will rise to the occasion”.

Julie added: “With so many Chippenham lads in the team I hope the host club supporters turn out to cheer on their clubs players and get behind the rest of the team as well”.

RFU County Shield

Berkshire 17 v Dorset & Wilts. 23.

Twin Counties Manager, RFU Somerset Rugby Development Officer, Julie Swann said: “A tremendous result for us, it’s always nice to get a victory, but favourable results on the road are hard to come by so a win against a side of Berkshire’s quality is twice as sweet to savour”.

She added: “ I don’t want to single out individual players as it was a great team victory, however, our fly half Cameron Brown was at the hub of all four of our tries and Chippenham lock Aaron Ascott was awarded the man of the match trophy”.

The twice past winners of this competition, Dorset & Wilts. raced into an early lead with a try from North Dorset left winger Joe Willoughby, closely followed up with a second touchdown courtesy of right wing, Ryan Surry of Chippenham.

North Dorset full back, Jay Westcar added a penalty late in the first period to make the score at the break Berkshire 3 points Dorset & Wilts. 13.

After the interval, both Willoughby and Surry crossed the whitewash again for a try each to seal the result for the Combined Counties despite a late rally from Berkshire.

Next Saturday, Dorset and Wilts entertain Oxfordshire at Chippenham rugby club in their second pool game of the competition with the game kicking off at 2.30pm.
